MEXICO

February 2022

3 months in Mexico was certainly not enough time to cover everything that this country has to offer. Mexico is made up of mountains, jungle, busy cities, desserts, Caribbean Sea and 7,338km of pacific surf coast.

Starting in Mexico City I stayed in the Condesa region with a view of Popocatépetl volcano. Day trips from the city included the Teotihuacán pyramids and Grutas Tolantongo thermal pools in the jungle. A weekend trip to San Luis Potosi lead to a day rowing up the turquoise blue waters of the Tampaon river to the Tamul Waterfall. I visited the incredible surrealist sculpture garden Las Posas by artist James Edwards in the Xilitila jungle.

After leaving the city I flew to Puerto Vallarta and drove to the surf town Sayulita. The best beaches in Sayulita were San Pancho and Carricitos (which you can only access via an overgrown path.) From Sayulita, Nayarit I ventured to the Oaxaca state of Mexico. Oaxaca city, Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and Barra de la Cruz near Huatulco were all highlights.

During my time on the East coast of Mexico I arrived in Cancun then made my way down to Playa del Carmen to get a ferry across to Cozumel island where I completed my PADI open water diver certification. Followed by Tulum and Bacalar. Bacalar is known as the lagoon of 7 colours as from a bird’s-eye view it has incredible changing tones of blue, it was a highlight of my trip.

After Bacalar I stopped off at many Cenotes (Grand Cenote, Taak bi Haar, Cenote Calavera and Dos Ojos) on my way to Isla Holbox.

To conclude my backpacking trip I spent 1 month on Isla Holbox living the slow beach life!

In 2022 I then returned to Mexico for a total of 3 months whilst working on a Superyacht. We spent time in La Paz, Ensenada and 1 month cruising the Sea of Cortez.
