SPAIN
May 2023- September 2023
After crossing the Atlantic, on a Superyacht that I was working on at the time, I arrived in Gijon, a coastal city in the North of Spain. The first thing that I noticed about Gijon was the stunning architecture. Perhaps it was because I had just come from the USA so I wasn’t used to seeing old buildings! Walking through the cobbled streets and having dinner at different tapas restaurants is how I spent most of my spare time in Gijon! The best spot in town is in the Plaza Mayor, the main square of the city. We were taken to a local Sidreria which are popular in the Basque region of Spain. You’re shown how to pour cider from a height and catch it in your cup, but you must drink it quickly before it oxidises and tastes of vinegar!
We then sailed down the Spanish coast, refuelling in Gibraltar before reaching Malaga.
In Malaga we were docked right in the main area of the city, a 10 minute walk into town to the Catedral de Malaga. I found my favourite paella spot in the square with views of the cathedral. Most mornings I would go running along the promenade to the main beach for a pre work sunrise swim and each day after work I would return to the beach for two hours of sunbathing and reading as the weather was so incredible at this time of year in Spain.
One of my favourite experiences during my time in Malaga was walking up to the Castillo de Gibralfaro (the castle that overlooks the city) and having dinner at the Restaurante Parador de Gibralfaro which has amazing views especially in the evening!
